The Nebraska Commission on African American Affairs would like to take the time to recognize the loss of a trailblazer. Omaha's beloved civil rights leader and long-time businessman, Daniel Goodwin, Sr., passed away on January 4, 2026, at the age of 93. A prominent figure in North Omaha, he cofounded Goodwin's Spencer Street Barbershop in 1955, a community hub where he advocated for Black equality, hosted leaders like Malcolm X, employed former Senator Ernie Chambers, and mentored generations.
A public memorial service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 11:00AM at New Hope Apostolic Temple.
